ABT Certificate Courses

The Advanced Bible & Theology (ABT) program at Twin Lakes Church is designed to give participants increased knowledge and understanding in basic Christian beliefs. Participants will complete a series of six (6) advanced Bible and Theology courses over a two-year time period, or longer, if necessary. These courses will be taught at the college freshman level. Upon completion of the classes and the corresponding course work, graduates receive a diploma, graduation ceremony and luncheon with pastoral participation, as well as congregational recognition during a Sunday morning service.

Course Descriptions

The following courses may be taken in any order as there are no prerequisites. Anyone may attend these classes; however, those wishing to receive an ABT Certificate will be required to: (1) attend at least 75% of the classes, (2) complete the written assignments, and (3) receive a passing grade for all six courses.

New Testament Survey (NTS)

This course is designed to give participants an overview of the New Testament, including its major thematic elements, its major historical events, and how it was written for the instruction and encouragement of the Christian church (Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). Topics Include:

Old Testament Survey (OTS)

This course is designed to give participants an understanding of the contemporary significance of the Old Testament, and its theological perspectives. The course will provide an overview of the Old Testament, including its major thematic elements, its major historical events, and how it was written for the instruction and encouragement of the Christian church (Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). Topics Include:

Hermeneutics (HERM)

This course shows participants how to get the most out of a Bible study by interpreting it properly. It addresses the various literary genres of the Bible, how to examine the context and exegete the author's intended message. Topics Include:

How to discover the author's intended message

bullet

How to distinguish between figurative and literal language

How to distinguish between descriptive and prescriptive context

How to apply the Bible to your life

Systematic Theology I (STI)

The objective of this introduction to systematic theology is designed to equip believers to know what they believe and why they believe it. Upon completion of this course, participants will support their individual positions on the major doctrines of the church in written form. Topics Include:

Bibliology: The nature and character of the Bible

Theology Proper: The nature and work of the triune God

bullet

Christology: Who Jesus is, and the nature and significance of what he accomplished in the incarnation

Pneumatology: The person and work of the Holy Spirit

Anthropology: Humans as God's creatures

Systematic Theology II (STII)

The course which is a continuation in systematic theology studies, is also designed to equip believers to know what they believe and why they believe it. Upon completion of this course, participants will support their individual positions on the major doctrines of the church in written form. Topics Include:

Hamartiology: The origin, nature, extent, and consequences of sin

Angelology: The nature and work of angels (good and fallen)

bullet

Soteriology: The triune God in bringing creation, especially humans, to enjoy the divine purpose for existence

bullet

Ecclesiology: The nature and function of the church

bullet

Eschatology: The direction or purpose of history as it moves toward the future

Church History (HIST)

This course presents an overview of the history of Christianity from Pentecost to today. It will also acquaint participants with the emerging of various denominations down through history, and how they differ from one another. Topics Include:
