"Hermeneutics is about how to study and understand the Bible. The reason we take that so seriously should be self-evident to most of you: we take the Bible very seriously. We insist it is the word of God. But then we find that understanding it is not as simple an undertaking as we might expect or wish. Why do sincere and faithful and intelligent Christians disagree about doctrines? Sometimes because they’re not as sincere or honest as we might think or hope. Sometimes because they’re not as intelligent as we might attribute. But often it is because this business of interpretation – understanding meaning – is not as simple as it looks to the untrained eye. It is deceiving in part because in everyday life we routinely interpret numerous messages without difficulty or controversy." Gary Tuck, Ph.D., Professor of Literature, Western Seminary.
