Ephesians is a book about encouragement, focusing on the following themes:
1. The believer has a unique position “in Christ.” The phrase “in Christ” is used thirty-four times in this letter. The author emphasizes how the believer is raised with Christ, made alive in Christ, and seated with Christ “so that in the coming ages Christ might show the incomparable riches of his grace” (2:5-7).
2. The unification of believing Jews and Gentiles is another key theme in Ephesians. Through Jesus’ work on the cross, both Jews and Gentiles are incorporated into one body (2:16; 3:6).
3. Believers are to resist the vicious attacks of the hostile powers. In Ephesus there were those who worshipped Artemis, the goddess of the underworld. The culture was saturated with magical practices due to an extraordinary fear of the hostile spiritual “powers.” Ephesians highlights the real war between these “powers” and the church, with believers instructed to be strong in the Lord and in his might (6:10-20).
