The good news brought by Jesus Christ introduced Jews to a new way of life—that of grace rather than the law. The old covenant with all its laws was made obsolete by the new covenant (Heb. 8:13). This news was difficult for some Jewish believers to accept. Were life-long practices such celebrating specific Jewish holidays, and strict observance of the Sabbath now suddenly obsolete? Was circumcision no longer necessary? Surely not, many thought. Rather than view the old covenant as obsolete, many Jews saw the new covenant as an add-on to the old covenant. To them the gospel was faith + works. It was this message they carried to young Christians in Galatia causing confusion and chaos. The book of Galatians is Paul’s response to the false teaching of these Judaizers--the gospel of salvation is about grace alone, faith plus nothing.
